From You Should Be Happy
He’s in the same breathy, reflective singer/songwriter territory once occupied by Smith, but he sometimes substitutes banjo for guitar, folk-country for baroque pop, and..if the slightly shinier tone of his lyrics are any indication..microwave dinners for heroin injections.” — Goodhodgkins.com
“The missing link between Elliott Smith and Death Cab for Cutie.” — uWeekly.com
“The songs on the album flow into each other, fitting together like pieces of a puzzle that ultimately add up to something much bigger.” — The Other Paper
“You Should Be Happy is his first batch of tunes to ditch the lo-fi aesthetics and delve into an assortment of beautifully arranged singer-songwriterly dispatches from the basement.” — Columbus Dispatch
“You Should Be Happy offers more incredibly distinct songwriting from ex-Tiara masermind Eric Metronome.” — Alive
Miranda Sound
From Western Reserve
“Western Reserve” finds Miranda Sound fulfilling its considerable potential amid the white noise of so many other post-punk poseurs. — Denver Post
“Western Reserve is by far the best release by one of Columbus’s best bands.” - The Other Paper
“The record bests its predecessors not only through increased musicianship, but also by wedding the complexities of the band’s material with the kinetic energy of its performances.” — Columbus Alive (cover story)
“The album was produced by J Robbins, who formerly guided Clutch, the Promise Ring and Shiner. His involvement plus able assistance from Columbus engineers Neal Schmitt and Jon Chinn, not to mention Chinn’s Workbook Studio, lend the recording a crisp pop sound.” - Columbus Dispatch
“A Fugazi for the next generation. Stand back, because the sweat is going to fly.” — Playback St Louis
“From start to finish, the album is quality – big, full-sounding, indie-rock anthems, written with intelligence and sung in earnest. The band is polished, driven by excellent guitar work and drumming, but never sacrificing sound over substance, as the four craft meaningful, listenable lyrics rather than some inane catchphrase geared to sell phone plans. What a concept! As the title promises, the album is rich in melody, majestic in scope and honest in all.” — Hitch Magazine
The Celebrity Pilots
From Beneath the Pavement, A Beach!
“Musicians still skeptical of the power the Internet in terms of promoting unsigned music might want to look at the story of Cleveland musician Chris Sheehan, aka THE CELEBRITY PILOTS. Sheehan’s one-man-band project caught the attention of music news and critique blog donewating.com (based in Columbus), which had formed a satellite record label, Sunken Treasure Records. In September, the imprint released the excellent Celebrity Pilots debut, Beneath the Pavement, A Beach!, which grabbed the attention of famed Cincy-based online radio station woxy.com. The album caught fire on the station, landing in the No. 1 spot on WOXY’s “Most Played” chart. Beneath the Pavement is a strong, dynamic Power Pop effort laced with synths and melodies that ring with the catchiness of the classics, from The Smiths to Wilco to Guided By Voices. The GBV influence is ingrained — Sheehan has spent time playing keyboards with Bob Pollard and guitar with Doug Gillard, while the album itself was recorded with former GBVer Todd Tobias.” — City Beat
“Whether it’s ringing power-pop, or stark soliloquies, Sheehan boasts the same deftly crafted acumen of established visionaries like Ted Leo and Apples In Stereo’s Robert Schneider, which as it goes without saying makes for some highly desirable company.” - The Big Takeover
“In the liner notes to their latest, the Celebrity Pilots thank Peter Sellers, Thomas Pynchon, and the Kinks, among others. It’s a telling list, as this is droll, literate pop, as timeless as the heartache that inspires it.
For the past year or so, Pilots main man Chris Sheehan has been playing guitar in Doug Gillard’s band, and Pavement sounds as if he took notes the whole time. Tracked at Kent’s Waterloo Sound Recording with Todd Tobias (Gillard, Guided by Voices), the album benefits from a busy three-dimensional mix. Nearly every song bursts with layers of sci-fi synth and whirring samples, making Pavement an album that really comes alive when the headphones are on. Sheehan sings with a soft, plaintive lilt, his guitar providing all the fireworks on stirring pop daydreams (”Lemons From Lemonade”) and growling garage rockers (”Long Live the Sting”). With Gillard having recently left town, Pavement makes a strong case for Sheehan’s taking his place as the region’s leading pop troubadour. ” - Cleveland Scene
“If you worship crunchy guitars and poppy synthesizers, then you will eat this up.” — Unfinished“I’ve really been enjoying The Celebrity Pilots’ album Beneath The Pavement, A Beach this week. Cleveland’s own Chris Sheehan is a virtual one man band, playing nearly all the instruments himself. The result is really great music that fits somewhere in between The New Pornographers and Yo La Tengo. Sheehan’s also played keyboards with Bob Pollard and Guided By Voices guitar player Doug Gillard.” - Stereogum
“One of the benefits of the dissolution of Guided By Voices is the inevitable side projects. Multi-instrumentalist Chris Sheehan, who’s played with GBV guitarist Doug Gillard and frontman Robert Pollard, has lots to offer GBV diehards - and just plain old pop fans - with the Celebrity Pilots.” — Philadelphia Inquirer
“You’ll love the lush indie pop.” - Cincinnati Weekly
“The Celebrity Pilots is the performance name for one Chris Sheehan, an Ohio indie-rocker with a love of lush Brit-pop melodies, analog synths, and swirling, multi-layered production. The songs here are by turns enchanting - Guided By Voices seems the obvious comparison - intriguing, and beguiling, with brain-tickling titles like “We Lost Kasparov” and “Long Live The Sting.” Fourteen tracks and not a duff cut to be found. Well worth seeking out.” — Jersey Beat
“The indie rock kids will be talking about The Celebrity Pilots this fall no doubt; they’ve got it all - the shimmery guitars, the gurgling synths, sweet pop melodies and solid indie rock drums.” — Left Hip Magazine
“[Sheehan] exhibits the same genius in his songwriting that he does in his main as a NASA engineer who designs International Space Station experiments… A sensible fellow with an ear for catchy pop bliss, The Celebrity Pilots likes to layer their songs thick with rich textures and creative soundscapes.” — Smother.net
